Trail Description:
Starting Point: Begin your adventure at the Ozette Ranger Station.
Boardwalks and Beaches: The trail meanders through lush coastal forests, and you’ll soon encounter the famous boardwalks. These elevated pathways protect the fragile ecosystem while providing stunning views. Keep an eye out for bald eagles soaring overhead!
Cape Alava: Reach Cape Alava, where the forest meets the rugged coastline. Explore tide pools, marvel at sea stacks, and breathe in the salty ocean air.
Sand Point: Continue along the coast to Sand Point, another picturesque spot. Here, you’ll find expansive sandy beaches, driftwood, and perhaps even a curious seal or two.
Wildlife Encounters: Keep your camera ready! Marine mammals like seals, sea otters, and gray whales often make appearances.
Campsites: The primary camping destinations are Sand Point and Cape Alava. Set up your tent near the crashing waves or nestled in the forest.
Water Sources: Creeks at Sand Point and Cape Alava provide water. Remember that coastal water may have a tea-stained appearance due to tannins leached from leaves. Always filter or boil water to stay safe.
Leave No Trace: Practice Leave No Trace principles to protect this pristine wilderness. Bury waste properly, pack out toilet paper, and respect the environment.
Tips and Considerations:
Permits: Wilderness permits are limited year-round. Book early, especially for trips between May and September.
Bear Safety: Store all food, garbage, and scented items in park-approved bear canisters. Unfortunately, bear canisters are not available at the Ozette Ranger Station.
Campfires: Campfires are prohibited between the headland north of Yellow Banks and the headland at Wedding Rocks. Use driftwood for fires on the beach.
Water Availability: Later in the summer, water sources at Wedding Rocks, Sand Point, and South Sand Point may dry up. Carry enough water during your stay.
Group Size: Groups are limited to 12 people. Associated groups must camp and travel at least 1 mile apart.
Toilet Facilities: Pit toilets are available at Sand Point and Cape Alava. Otherwise, bury waste properly.
Enjoy the Journey: Take your time, savor the views, and immerse yourself in the coastal magic of the Ozette Triangle Loop Trail.
