The journey began at the Graves Creek Trailhead. The trail quickly delves into the lush temperate rainforest characteristic of Olympic National Park. Day 2: Pony Bridge to O’Neil Creek Camp – 6.5 miles

Following the Quinault River upstream, we made our way deeper into the heart of the forest. Mosses and ferns blanketed the ground, while the distant rumble of the river provided a comforting backdrop. We passed through several avalanche chutes, which offered brief openings in the canopy and views of the surrounding mountains.

We reached O’Neil Creek and set up camp, enjoying the serene setting.

  • Diverse ecosystems
  • Avalanche chutes
  • Serene river views

Day 3: O’Neil Creek to Enchanted Valley – 3.5 miles

The anticipation built as we approached our main destination. The trail became slightly steeper, and waterfalls started appearing, cascading from the cliffs above. Upon entering the Enchanted Valley, we were greeted by the sight of the grand Chalet, a historic building now serving as an emergency shelter.

The valley, flanked by snow-capped peaks and dotted with countless waterfalls, truly lived up to its “enchanted” moniker.

  • Multiple waterfalls
  • The historic Enchanted Valley Chalet
  • Panoramic views of the valley and mountains

Day 4: Exploring Enchanted Valley

We spent a day exploring the valley. The wildlife was abundant. We spotted black bears grazing in the meadows, elk herds in the distance, and marmots sunning on rocks. We also hiked up to a few of the valley’s waterfalls and admired the views from different vantage points.

Highlights:

  • Close encounters with the park’s wildlife
  • The sheer beauty and serenity of the valley
  • The grandeur of the cascading falls

Day 5: Enchanted Valley to Graves Creek Trailhead – 13.5 miles

With heavy hearts, we began our journey back, retracing our steps through the rainforest. The return trip offered a different perspective on the landscapes we had passed, and we took our time to soak in the beauty.

By the time we reached the trailhead, our legs were tired, but our spirits were lifted by the memories of the enchanting valley.

Weather Patterns:

Being a temperate rainforest, the Olympic National Park experiences frequent rainfall, especially during fall and winter. Summer months (July to September) are the driest and best suited for hiking. Even then, the weather can be unpredictable, with occasional showers and misty conditions. Temperatures can vary, so layered clothing is recommended.

Final Thoughts: The Enchanted Valley is aptly named. Its pristine beauty, rich biodiversity, and the sheer tranquillity make it a hiker’s dream. Ensure you practice Leave No Trace principles, especially given the presence of wildlife. If you seek an immersive experience in nature’s lap, this trek should be on your bucket list.
