Paul Marlatt – Hunting Stories

Paul Marlatt wrote a collection of hunting stories that included descriptions of hunting trips from 1943 to 2001.  These hunting stories were around the Boise Idaho area.  This anthology of stories is a family treasure.

All hunters have had good and bad hunts.  Some humorous′ Some Serious. I will attempt to recall in as much detail as can be remembered′ trip by trip′ throughout the years. Of course, there were some years not worth much coverage. Some were not worth writing about at all, but for the most Part, each trip was an experience of it-s own. To be able to have a total recall in detail, I had to have the collaboration of my brother Harry and our good friend Bud Garvin. Both were in on nearly all the hunts for the last thirty years and Harry was in on early trips from the time we first started hunting. other family members were along from time to time over the years.

Because of our close hunting relationship, we have avoided accidents and sickness that could have ruined a good trip. Care and a sense of survival was always for most on every hunt whether for one day or for a week. Many trips were in the setting of deep snow, Wild Storms and cold weather in the high mountains. As we grew older and wiser, We Started going earlier in the season to have warmer weather. We also bought and fixed up an old trailer house to stay in instead of trying to keep warm in a tent and used gas stoves in place of a campfire. When I Look back on some of these trips, I Wonder how We Survived without frost bite or injury or both.

Every trip had a light side to it no matter what happened. The three of us could always find something to 1augh at even at the expense of one of the others. A good supper and a warm bed were detrimental to staying healthy.

Having been the camp cook for most of these years, I Stayed with the basic foods, Nothing fancy but filling and tasty. I have put into the book most of the basic recipes used for the evening meals. Sometimes cans of chili or beef stew were warmed up for supper because of being easy to fix when we were tired from the day-s hunt. Breakfast doesn’t-t have much variation, Eggs usua11y were the main Staple with different items added each morning to have a Change now and then.  Fluffy pancakes were always welcome any morning.

The book is written in groups of years as we went to different areas. Doing this, I could use one year to remind me of the next year. This was the only way I could go back so many years with total recall. Some years we went on more than one trip. We have always enjoyed the hunting thrill, but camping out was really the highlight of all the trips. We respect the outdoors and a11 its creatures′ large or small. The best part of all the trips was just being out in the mountains we love so much.
